From the Desk of the Worthy Grand Matron:

Dear Sisters and Brothers,

May closed with one of the most exciting AR/LA Friendship Exchanges I can remember.  A large delegation of Arkansas and Louisiana Eastern Star Members gathered at the Texarkana Masonic Lodge in Texarkana, Arkansas for the “Harmony Reunion.”   Sister Elizabeth Ann Cooney and her committee did an excellent job.  There was a great crowd, the food was delicious but more importantly, the fellowship was awesome.

The District Deputy Grand Matrons are to be commended for their dedication to our Order.  From all the comments I have heard, they all had successful visits to the chapters and had great attendance at the Schools of Instruction.

The Rainbow Assembly was a delight to attend.  The girls were very proficient in their work.  Let’s remember to give them petitions for Eastern Star as soon as they reach Majority age.

July will be just as exciting as June and a very busy month for us.  I encourage all members to attend the Official Visits.

Guess Who???  Guess which DDGM sent me the following E-mail about her district:  All of my Official Visits are over.  Every one has been great with good attendance.  This has been a very beautiful time for me and the chapters have all been so gracious.  The hospitality has been wonderful. I am very proud of this district.  ???????????? DDGM?

Several questions have been asked about the Traveling Gavels.  The answers are as follows:

1.        Plural members may represent only ONE Chapter.

2.        After a plural member chooses the chapter she/he wishes to represent, she/he can visit other chapters in the district and get the gavel for the chapter she/he has chosen.

3.        If more than one chapter is represented at a meeting, the chapter with the most members present obtains the gavel.  In case of a tie, the chapter that travels the longest distance from the chapter they belong to gets the gavel.

4.        If more than one chapter meets in the same lodge and there is an equal number from the visiting chapters who meet there, the member who traveled the furthest distance will be given the gavel for her/his chapter.

5.        If a chapter has the gavel, cannot open due to a lack of a quorum, and has visitor/visitors, the visitor/visitors gets the gavel.

6.        A member of the chapter that gets a gavel must notify the District Chairman and the other chapters in the district that they have the gavel.

7.        The last day a chapter can obtain a gavel is February 28, 2010.

8.        The chapter that captures the gavel the most times will be presented the gavel at Grand Chapter.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to call me or the State Chairman.

We covet your prayers for Sister Elizabeth Roach who is recovering from dental surgery.  Our Golden Chain was broken with the death of Ruth Louise Spofford, PGM, and prayers go out to her family and her Chapter - J T Charnley #197.

Brother Harles I. Creech, P.M.W.G.P., and G.G.C.C.M.’s, Sisters Audrey Barker, Jane McDaniel, Jean Smith and Brothers Gwayne Denham and James Premeaux will be honored at General Grand Chapter.  If you and your chapter wish to participate in a voluntary love gift to these Louisiana members, please send your contribution to the Grand Secretary.

                                                                                                Fraternally,

                                                                                                Mary Howell
