November 2009 – Newsletter

*******************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

From the Desk of the Worthy Grand Matron:

November is the beginning of the holiday season.  Let us remember to give thanks to God for all the blessings He bestowed on us this past year.  Let us also remember to thank our families, friends, and especially our fellow Eastern Star Sisters and Brothers for their kindness and generosity to us this year. Let’s share these blessings with a Sister or Brother less fortunate than we.

As we count our blessings and give thanks for them, let us not forget our shut-ins.  They need our love and attention.

The LA/MS Western Days Friendship Exchange in Delhi, LA was well attended by a large delegation from both states.  Sister Joye Denny and the members of her district are to be commended for doing an outstanding job.  The contest was one of the highlights of the Exchange Visits.

The MS/LA Grand Old Opry with the Grand Old Family Friendship Exchange in Vicksburg, MS was a tremendous success.  Sister Roberta Nielsen and her committee did a fantastic job of providing everyone with a delicious catfish lunch and a delightful “Grand Old Opry” program which everyone present enjoyed.

The Official Visits are over.  Each was unique and exceptional.  The attendance was astonishing and the hard work of each Deputy was evident.  I send a special thanks to each of you for making the Official Visits a tremendous success.

As 2009 is fast coming to a close, it is time to begin preparing for Grand Chapter.   Sister Ruey Stewart, State Chairman of the Apple Tree Personal Achievement Awards, needs the names of those who have achieved the objectives by December 31, 2009.  Please send this information to her at the following address:  Ruey Stewart, GCCM, 3672 Hwy. 9, Chestnut, LA 71070-2758.

Our Associate Grand Matron, Sister Myra Ramsey, has been diagnosed with Colon Cancer.  Sister Myra had surgery this past Thursday at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital in Baton Rouge.  She came through the surgery and the prognosis is good.  She is now getting up and moving, slowly, around the room.  Please keep her and her family in your prayers - don’t forget those cards.

Brother George and I wish for you a very blessed Thanksgiving Day.

Words to the Wise:

The quality of life is in the mind, not in material.

                                                                                            Fraternally,

                                                                                            Mary Howell

DATES TO REMEMBER:

November 14 - Enhancing Our Knowledge Workshop, 110 Masonic Drive, Natchitoches, 9:00 a.m. This will be a joint workshop between the Committees of Law and Jurisprudence and Work and Ritual.  There will be exemplifications of things such as properly setting up a Chapter room, irregularities that take place, and a question and answer period.  Please bring those questions you have always wanted to ask and let’s all learn together.   Natchitoches Chapter No. 13 has agreed to prepare a meal for a nominal fee of $6.00.  Please let Sister Jean Jordan know if you will attend so they will know how many to prepare for.

With the Courtesy of the Worthy Grand Matron:  2010 ALASKAN CRUISE:      Come join AGM, Myra Ramsey, and, AGP, Donald Bordelon aboard the SAPPHIRE PRINCESS for our OES cruise to the beautiful state of ALASKA!  Our group will sail from Seattle on September 5, 2010, and visit Ketchikan, Tracy Arm Fjord, Juneau, Skagway, and Victoria, British Columbia on this exciting 7 day cruise. Per person cruise cost with port and government fees included range from $1100 to $1600 depending on your cabin choice and the number of occupants (maximum of 4 in a cabin). Space is limited.   A deposit of $200 per person is all that is required to hold you a spot.

OES will offer group airfare from select gateways at a later date.  In addition to airfare, extra costs to consider will be shore excursion options (priced from $50 to $180 per port), insurance, and shipboard gratuities.  We know this seems early, but Alaskan cruises sell quickly, and we don't want you to miss out on the fun! We will definitely keep you updated as information becomes available.

For a free brochure or to reserve your cabin, please call Dianne at Monroe Travel Service--

1 800 365 3465--and ask for the OES trip.  We hope you will make plans to join us!

APPRECIATION

Thank you Sister Mary Howell, Worthy Grand Matron, for allowing me to send my sincere thanks for all the attention given me during my recent illness.  Your prayers have sustained me, your cards have cheered and blessed me and your phone calls have been an encouragement.  I especially thank each chapter, and there were many, who sent cards.  They thrilled my soul.  God is good and Buck and I thank each of you for being our friend.  With Joy and Thankfulness, Joye Denny, P.G.M.

Thank you so much for the Clinton Ardis Mills Educational Scholarship presented to me.  This scholarship has helped me with books and other college expenses. Thank you for being such a great support group for myself and the rainbow girls.  Angela Cocran
